Protecting
Sri Lanka’s Wildlife

Discover our wide-ranging efforts to conserve endangered species, protect diverse ecosystems, and address the challenges of climate change. Through community engagement, education, and innovative initiatives, we strive to create a sustainable future for both nature and people.

Species

Focused on understanding Sri Lanka’s most at-risk wildlife through research, field studies, and long-term monitoring, its work is organised through three subcommittees: Critically Endangered Endemic Species, Human–Elephant Coexistence (HEC), and Wild Cats, which observe species behaviour, identify threats, and guide practical conservation actions grounded in evidence.

Ecosystems

Oversees projects that protect and restore key habitats across Sri Lanka. Through its subcommittees: PLANT, ROAR, Marine, and Green Isle, it carries out ecological restoration, habitat surveys, urban and rural ecosystem management, and long-term field work aimed at building resilient, functioning natural environments.

Platform Initiatives

Supports WNPS’s work by coordinating expert committees and various stakeholders that handle rapid response, science advisory functions, public lectures, fundraising, communication, publications, legal guidance, and climate-related research. This remains the core that strengthens decision-making, outreach, and day-to-day conservation operations.

Citizen and Communities

Connects people with conservation by working through youth programmes, children’s initiatives, public training, district representatives, legal advocacy, and digital outreach. Its role is to create meaningful pathways for individuals and communities to learn, participate, and take active responsibility for the environment.
